“Our sustainability practices developed a standard of responsibility that we continuously improve upon,” says General Manager Karin Devencenzi of the iconic restaurant in Portland’s Arts & Culture District. “For 14 years, we’ve been stewards of the environment not because we have to be, but because we want to be,” continues Devencenzi.
Sustainability at Work’s Silver Certification recognizes businesses for their leadership in helping make Portland one of the cleanest and most sustainable cities in the country. To recognize and promote their substantial actions to reduce carbon emissions, Sustainability at Work provides a certification that is valid for three years. In addition to the new certification, Southpark was one of the first restaurants in Oregon to be certified by the Green Restaurant Association®, it abides by the Monterey Bay Aquarium seafood standards, it has earned the Recycle Works award, and in 2010, even jump-started electric vehicle infrastructure by installing a charging station in the Southpark Garage.
With their ongoing commitment and desire to sustain the environment, Southpark has improved the energy efficiency of its business operations, provided alternative transportation options for employees, and implemented an active waste reduction and recycling program. To top off these green efforts, Southpark is focused on sustainable sourcing and forming lasting farmer and fisherman relationships. The restaurant supports small, local ranchers like Singing Pig Farm and Sexton Ranch, and is passionate about nurturing up-and-coming farmers and building local businesses.
