We still have lots of apples & pears on the tree, so this Friday (9/7) & Saturday (9/8), 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, you can make your own cider! If you buy apples & pears from us you can use our cider press on a first-come, first-served basis. Pears produce a slightly mild flavor and lighter-colored cider than apple. Another option is to combine the two.
U-Pick Price: $.90/lb, Over 50 lbs: $.75/lb.We are picking Gravenstein and Earligold apples and Bartlett pears. We are sold out of peaches for the season.
Large container to collect the cider. We use a canning kettle; the container can be no higher than 10 inches and needs to be 12 inches wide (see picture to right).
Containers to get the cider home. 5 gallon bucket with lid & paint strainer purchased at Home Depot, growlers, milk jugs, & ½ gallon jars all with a work well (see picture to left & bottom).
A pan/bowl to get the cider out of your collecting container and into your transporting container. We use a small sauce pan, a strainer, and a funnel to get the cider into old milk jugs or glass jugs for storage and easy transportation.
We suggest 3 people to make the process go smoothly and quickly. You may want to help the people in front or behind you in line since it is a lot of fun. Dress to get wet (rain boats) and messy with apple bits!
How much?
It takes 15-20 lbs. of apples & 20-25 lbs of pears to make 1 gallon of cider.
Please Note
We reserve the right to limit customers to putting 75 lbs. of apples through the cider press per day.
Customers may only use apples purchased that day at Jossy Farms.
Please pick the apples and pears from the tree. Do not use windfalls.
Customers will be sharing the cider press with others (family style).
